Sustainable Libraries Initiative Partners with ALA to Provide Sustainable Librarianship eCourse

New York – December 1, 2022 – The Sustainable Libraries Initiative (SLI) has entered into an eLearning partnership with the American Library Association (ALA) to provide educational opportunities for library professionals centered on the core value of sustainability in libraries. This partnership will draw on the expertise and experience of the SLI to offer a four-week eCourse, Sustainable Librarianship: Core Competencies and Practices, starting February 13, 2023.

“We are excited to partner with the American Library Association to help more library workers connect with the necessary work to ensure information institutions and the communities we serve are not just resilient but regenerative in the face of climate change,” said Rebekkah Smith Aldrich, SLI Advisory Board President, “This requires a new mindset to meet the challenges of the present and future and we are excited to be part of the strategy to help prepare folks.”

This course will address the critical role of libraries as active and intentional participants in building community resilience. Through the four-week course, students will gain an understanding of the triple bottom line definition of sustainability used by the SLI and the ALA. Students will have the ability to investigate the services and practices in their own institutions that contribute to climate mitigation and preparedness. Participants will be empowered to design new services and seek new partnerships that meet the specific needs of their communities. Additionally, strategies for addressing equity, diversity, and inclusion in climate preparation and adaptation work will be discussed. The course instructor is Rebekkah Smith Aldrich, SLI Advisory Board President.

There are 25 spaces available for active SLI Members to join this course for free. These spaces are first come, first serve. Contact SLI Staff to register: sliadmin@suffolknet.org.
