Certified Sustainable Library Media Specialist, Michelle Statfeld, Promotes Literacy Through Book Drive

Long Island Library Resources Council Newsletter September/October V.42 NO. 5

West Babylon Junior High School Library Media Specialist Michelle Statfeld partnered with Book Fairies to organize a mini book fair for students and faculty. Book Fairies sources and redistributes books to under-resourced communities on Long Island, NYC
and internationally to provide equitable opportunities for children to learn, grow, and thrive. Building upon the established partnership which began before she began working towards certification, Michelle Statfeld decided to organize a mini book fair after attending the Book Fairies book drive this summer.

The mini book fair allowed students at West Babylon Junior High School to select books to take home and add to their own personal home library collections. This initiative promotes literacy and a sense of ownership and pride in students reading materials. Faculty also benefitted by being able to choose from a diverse selection of books, further strengthening their classroom libraries to support their students learning journey.
