An effective way to communicate your sustainability journey and successes to your community is to promote it on your library’s website. Below are some examples from our member libraries:
Longwood Public Library displays content that reflects recent sustainability-related news. Their “What’s Growing On? Native Plants at the Longwood Public Library” video explains why native plants were chosen for the library grounds and identifies several varieties for patrons to locate during their next visit. They have also posted their Certification Presentation Slide Show to inform their community of what they have accomplished through their work on their SLCP Certification.
Lindenhurst has an entire section of Sustainability Content that is listed on the Homepage ‘About’ Navigation tab:
They mention their certification and the significance of being one of the first libraries in the country to achieve this. They clearly define what the triple bottom line definition of sustainability means and how their library is working toward this.
Millbrook Library’s Sustainability page offers detailed information about their enrollment in the Sustainable Library Certification Program. They detail some of the ways they are working to achieve this certification and highlight programs, such as the library of Local, that are available to community members.
Hauppauge Public Library shows off their Green Team and uses their Sustainability page to thank their elected officials for helping direct funding that made some of their actions possible.
It is beneficial to showcase the work you are actively doing by highlighting staff members who are working to guide the decision-making in the library towards alignment with better environmental stewardship, advancing community resilience and social equity, and keeping within the financial resources approved by taxpayers.
Sayville Library’s Sustainability Page can be found through the about us tab on the navigation menu. They link to their Sustainability Policy, relevant programming and events, and show detailed descriptions of what work the library has done to work towards embedding sustainable decision-making into their organization, plus helpful links for helping the patron’s own sustainability efforts.
Copiague Memorial Public Library
Copiague Memorial Public Library showcases their participation in the SLI in the “What’s happening at the Library” section of their homepage. This page includes information about the SLI, the SLCP, and lists their ongoing programs and future plans.
Comsewogue Public Library has information on their About Us page and links to the press release announcing their certification. They have information about current sustainable projects such as their pollinator garden created in partnership with their local Girl Scout Troop. They also have their Certification Presentation on this page to communicate what work they have done to achieve SLI Certification.
Haverstraw King’s Daughters Public Library
HKDPL highlights Sustainability on their “About Us” page with pictures from the Certification Celebration. The highlight a Certificate of Achievement from the State Senator and acknowledge the support from the Ramapo Catskill Library System.
Curtis Memorial Library Sustainability page
Curtis Memorial Library informs their community of the importance of sustainability in their Strategic Plan as updated in 2020. They announce their commitment to lead by example with their own sustainable practices, educate their community, and advance social equity in their community as part of these efforts. They detail the work they are doing and include a comprehensive list of their plans going forward.
Brentwood Public Library advertises their commitment to sustainability with a “Green Library” tab on their main navigation menu under the “About Us” drop-down tab. This page contains dynamic graphics and widget that show how many trees have been planted through their membership in the PrintReleaf paper use offset program (available to all SLCP Members) and their live solar power output.
Plainedge Public Library have announced their enrollment in the SLCP by adding a slide on their webpage banner.
In addition, they are reporting their membership in Print Releaf, a service provided to SLCP Member libraries through CCP Copy Solutions, with the real-time status of the reforestation projects that they are supporting.
